My tour guide/driver for the afternoon was Sarah. After visiting the Donkey Sanctuary with her and two local girls, we were on our way to Philip’s Animal Garden. From far, we saw Hooiberg and the Ayo Rock Formations. When we drove by a bakery selling oliebol, we took a break so that I could sample the holiday treat.
Oliebol is a fried puff of dough with raisins. It is a traditional Dutch holiday sweet that became part of Aruban customs too. At first, I thought it would be an oily ball, because its name seemed to suggest so. But it was not oily at all. It has a fluffy center accented with pieces of dried grapes.
